About the DepartmentOur Biotechnology Department make the students as a job provider by using the knowledge skill and expertise for setting up Biotechnology based enterprises in different areas like Agriculture, Medicine, Pharmaceutics, Fisheries, Horticulture and Vertinary field as well as it serves a platform for higher education and research. This field has emerged in a big way in helping mankind by introducing technological advancements in the about fields.The Department of Biotechnology offers B.Sc., and M.Sc., programmes in Biotechnology. It has committed faculties to guide students. It has a very spacious and well-equipped laboratory with centralized instrumentation room both for UG and PG disciplines. It has imported Instruments like UV Spectrophotometer, Refrigerated Centrifuge, Gene amplifying machine, Digester, Vortexer, Thermostat Shaker, .Fluorescent /Phase Contrast / Dark Field Microscope, Sonicator, PCR, Vacuum Concentrator, Cold Room facility for Downstream Processing of chemicals, solutions and cultures and CO 2 Incubator as per the norms of Bharathiar University. Modern facilities like Microbial cell culture rooms with sophisticated Instruments that supports all biotechnology research needs. It has a separate preparation-cum washing room for B.Sc. and M.Sc. students. The imported instruments are connected to computers for biological and biochemical data analysis by using Bio Statistics Software. Gel Documentation System and Microscope Photography enable the student to visualize and store results in digital formats for further scientific publications. Well-equipped instrumentation room provides individual hands-on working experience to all budding Biotechnologists. Both the undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes prepare students to make them fit to join R&D laboratories, Biotech Companies, academic streams etc. EligibilityA Pass in HSC / +2 (with Maths/Physics/Chemistry/Botany/Zoology/Diploma in Lab Technology) Lab Facilities

Department ActivitiesThe Department offers U.G. and P.G. courses and gleams under the direction of Mr.K.Abdhul, Head of the Department and with 8 devoted faculty members. It has a well-equipped Laboratories, separately constructed for U.G. and P.G. candidates with exemplary instruments. It comprises instruments like, Spectrophotometer, Refrigerated Centrifuge, Gene Amplifying Machine, Vortexer and Thermostat Shaker. A separate cold room is also available for preservation of chemicals, solutions and cultures.Blood Identification Camp was conducted by our department from 28 th July 2010 to 30 th July 2010. The Seminar on 'Functional Foods' was channeled by Dr. J.M.Sasikumar, Head, Dept. of Biotechnology and Industrial Biotechnology atKarpagam University, Coimbatore on 9 th Sep 2010. Guest lecture on 'Medical Transcription' was delivered by Ms.S.Sathyapriya and Ms.Rohini Pratap on 11 th Dec 2010. Dr. S.Basker,Asst.Prof., and Dr. V.Narmatha Bai together published a paper entitled Invitro Propogation of an Epiphytic and rare Orchid Eria Bambusifolia Lind in Dec 2010, in the Journal Research in Biotechnology. Mr.S.Karthik,Asst.Prof., attended UGC-NRC-DBS 2nd Workshop on "Techniques in Protein Purification" from 22 nd Nov 2010 to 29 th Nov 2010, organized by Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
Mr.G.Dharmaraj, Asst.Prof., and Dr.S.Arumugam jointly published a Paper on 'Analog Designing and Target Identification of Collagenase in Wound Healing' in International Journal of Biotechnology and Biochemistry. Ms.Y.Sujatha Devi of III B.Sc., Biotech won II Prize in Singing Contest in an Inter-Collegiate Meet, conducted by Kongu Arts and Science College, Erode on 7 th and 8 th of Jan 2010. Ms.Juby Mary and Ms.Nandhini of II M.Sc., Biotechnology acquired the II and VII Ranks in the University Examinations, respectively. Mr.Saffic of III B.Sc., Biotechnology acquired the VIII Rank in the University Examination. Industrial Visit was arranged for the students of both U.G. and P.G. to Indian Institute of Science (IISC) , Bangalore and Central Sericulture Research and Training Institute (CSRTI), Mysore on 16 th and 17 th Sep 2010. Ms.M.Ramya of I M.Sc., Biotech and P.Anburajan of III B.Sc, Biotech succeeded in getting I Prize and II Prize respectively in the Innovation Day, conducted by Nandha Educational Institutions, Erode from 28 th to 30 th Jan 2011. The following students presented Papers in the UGC sponsored National Level Seminar on Conservation and Utilization of Rural and Ethnomedicinal Plants held on 28 th and 29 th Jan 2011 in Gobi Arts and Science College, Gobichettipalayam,Erode.
State Level Seminar on 'Frontiers in Biotechnology' was conducted on 18 th Feb 2011. More than 160 candidates from various colleges participated and presented Papers and displayed Posters. |
